They return to the house and Sophie-Ann, complete with ornate birdcage and scantily dressed pet, is carried up the stairs. Eric hangs back and watches Edgington's consort have a hissy fit.
Watches Edgington try to console him.
Watches as Edginton tells Talbot that all that matters to him is that Talbot is kept safe.

Yes

He interrupts them, telling Edgington of the hysterical werebitch waiting in his study.
Apparently, Sookie managed to off the bitch's smelly lover and now she wants revenge. She wants to rip off their heads, she says. Edgington seems to find this almost endearing and asks Eric for his opinion. He replies that while he enjoys a good head ripping as much as the next vampire, the value of the heads in question should probably be considered.

Such as that of Ms Stackhouse.

"Oh, she is special," Edginton purrs and when the bitch starts wailing about how Sookie is a cunt, he amends it to, "Yes, but a special cunt." Looking at Eric.
The bitch is promised that she'll get to play with Sookie once they catch her and then she is told to run along.

"Respectfully, Your Majesty, given the recent turn of events, bringing Sookie into this may not be the best idea," Eric says. Carefully.

"Well, that's exactly why I need her. I may have inadvertently started a war tonight.Miss Stackhouse could be my secret weapon," Edginton counters.

"Well, Sookie's abilities are unpredictable at best. And like most humans, she's ruled by petty emotions.I would not trust her." Striving for cynical and detached and perhaps not quite hitting the note right.

"Hm," Edgington says. And then he is standing, almost pressed against Eric, looking up at him, eyes lit with fierce paranoia.

"The real question is: Can I trust you? You turned on your own queen," he hisses. "And now that I've freed your feisty little ward how do I know you won't sell me out as well?"

"Because I have been searching for you for a thousand years," Eric grinds out in return.

And the world stops.

He is right there. Right there.
The murderer.

His revenge is so close.

But he cannot win. He knows this. Not in direct combat.
Not like this.

So instead, he continues speaking, in a low, strained voice.
"A true leader. One strong enough -" And he sinks to his knees in front of Edginton, looking up at him, "to unite us all."

It hurts. But he must make this believable. He must make Edgington trust him. He must.

So he keeps looking as he continues, "I believed my maker, Godric, was such a vampire, but he was -"

And he almost falters. He hesitates for the briefest of moments and briefly looks away before he can manage to force the next words out.

"- weak. He succumbed to his humanity, and it killed him."

He looks back up at Edgington and holds his gaze.

"Dispatching the Magister, that proved without a doubt that my search It has finally ended." He manages to smile a little.

"That was rash and foolish," Edginton half protests, clearly pleased, but Eric cuts him off, his voice filled with passion. With anger. "It was brave and uncompromising," he says, before continuing, "Vampires have yearned for someone to stand up to the tyranny of the Authority for centuries."

And he lets his face be as open as he possibly can. As honest. As - hopeful.
Watching how the look on Edgington's face slowly softens.

"Just give me the chance," he says, lowering his voice and taking Edgington's little soft hand in both of his, dipping his head to kiss his ring. Devotedly.

He looks back up and continues "And I will show you just how deep my loyalty runs."

Holding his gaze. Promising. Asking.

And then Edgington touches his shoulder lightly and it takes every ounce of self control he has to not sag with relief.

He bought it.

He heads back to his room. His face feels frozen, but he must seem normal because nobody he passes seem to notice anything untoward.

He opens the door and locks it behind him.

Then he sits down on the floor, between the bed and the dresser, as far away from the door as he can get.

He puts his arms around his legs and presses his face against his knees. And from then and till the sun approaches the horizon, he stays in place, whispering, " Forlät, forlät, forlät," over, and over, and over, and over.

forgive me, forgive me, forgive me

And then, later, when the sun has fully risen and his eyes are beginning to bleed (because of the sun, it is only because of the sun), he hides in the hallway. Waiting.
The door to Sophie-Ann's room opens and plump, pretty Hadley sneaks out, dressed in a tiny, lacy number, with mussed girly pigtails and pink lip gloss.

He grabs her, his large hand covering her mouth, and bends down to almost whisper "I'm not gonna hurt you.I need you to deliver a message to your cousin." Removing his hand to let her answer.

"I ain't seen Sookie since-- " Hadley manages to get out before he stops her.

"Tell her exactly what I say, and nothing more," he says. And then he tells her to warn her cousin. And he makes her repeat the message twice.
Then he lets her go.

And he returns to his room and he goes to bed and the darkness takes him.
